Facebook back online after global outage

FACEBOOK, WHATSAPP, INSTAGRAM BACK ONLINE AFTER GLOBAL OUTAGE

By Alexia Attwood on ABC PM

Facebook's difficult week under pressure from a whistleblower got worse today.

The social media giant's platform crashed, leaving billions of its users and those on Facebook-owned WhatsApp and Instagram in the dark for almost six hours.

As its stock plunged nearly five per cent in New York trade, CEO Mark Zuckerberg's personal wealth plunged by an estimated US$6 billion in a few hours.

The outage wasn't a cyber attack but rather problems in its own internal system, raising new questions about the globe's heavy reliance on Facebook's services.
